Features and Benefits

What are the features and benefits of the Gated Cantilever Sliding Gate System versus trolley wheel and other sliding gate designs?

The advantages of a true cantilever sliding gate system over trolley wheel systems.

The cantilever sliding gate design philosophy system offers the most efficient and reliable sliding gate design known to the security industry. The cantilever sliding gate is a design response to eliminate the obvious design limitations with speed and reliability that exist with trolley wheel or tracked gate systems. As tracked gates are dependent upon being mounted upon concrete strips across a driveway surfaces, the rail they drive upon will limit their opening and closing speeds. This is not desirable in high security applications.

Because a cantilever gate design does away with tracks and trolley wheels with its gate leaf “free in air”, the opening and closing speeds of the gate are potentially higher. Further, a cantilever gate may be successfully installed regardless of the camber or crown of the road surface. As there are no tracks, an uneven road surface does not affect the installation.

As trolley wheel gate tracks are mounted across the roadway, it is very common for the rails to become loose with the track itself being crashed and flattened by road traffic. Heavy commercial vehicles such as forklifts, cranes and semi trailers may cause considerable damage to the rails which initiates gate failures and cause higher than usual gate maintenance costs. Indeed dirt and debris will often cause the trolley wheels and bearings to wear excessively and fail. The trolley wheels can also be bumped off track immediately causing annoying gate failure and attendance by maintenance staff. Not least your site security is immediately compromised by unreliability.

Robust modular construction details

There is really no comparison between a traditional trolley wheel gate system and the Gated cantilever design. However, the most important difference would have to be the overall rigidity and strength. Our gates are made of more robust RHS section than traditional trolley wheel gate systems. Because a cantilever design has much less rolling resistance there is no real limitation as the weight of our gate system. Further and instead of two individual guide posts, Gated manufacturers a four post gate tower section which is joined both at the top and bottom. This provides considerable strength and stability to the cantilever structure and also provides a secure and easily accessible platform for all our electronics and the motor/gearbox mechanism of the gate. Another important benefit of the Gated gate tower design is that its motor assembly and electronics are mounted high above the ground surface.

Another key feature is that Gated only use true industrial quality three phase motor/gearbox drives. Via a drive cog connected to the motor, it meshes directly to steel racking mounted on the top horizontal frame of the gate leaf. No cheap and unreliable consumable parts such as chains or vee belts are used.

All Gated products are packaged to provide a robust but aesthetically pleasing design.

Technologically advanced electronics and automation.

The Gated cantilever sliding gate system is a technically a far more advanced gate design than any trolley wheel and indeed most other cantilever sliding gate systems. For example, our gate systems possess a multitude of safety systems as standard, not optional, on each gate.

Further, our cantilever gate has many clever but simple design differences that make for a superior package. For example, our drive motor is built on a separate platform with a spring mounting arrangement. This allows easy access and adjustability for the drive cog and racking. It also allows for an easy to use quick release process for manual opening and closing of the gate. This can be done without the necessity of using special tools or wasting time with fiddly adjustments to release the motor from the racking that plague other gate designs.

All Gated systems use a true industrial quality PLC (programmable logic control) as standard equipment. The PLC enables accurate and reliable monitoring of the many electrical, alarm and safety systems.

Our choice of a three-phase industrial grade .75Kw drive motor is rated at a true 100% duty cycle. For reliable gate operation with high speed gate opening and closing capabilities, only a 100% duty cycle product will suffice. The Gated cantilever sliding gate has adjustable opening and closing speeds that may be initiated through our quality frequency inverter. The gate speed is normally set at 700mm per second for opening and 600mm per second for closing, however the system can be easily adjusted upwards towards one-metre per second as required by clients for high security environments.

System reaction to power outage and easy to use manual gate opening system.

In the event of power failure our gate system will not compromise your perimeter security.

As our quality system has built-in power failure brake locking which will hold the gate locked throughout any power outage and failure.

In the event that the gate is shut due to power failure, it can be easily opened manually by simply releasing the motor via the motor brake release lever, which is housed within the lockable enclosure.

Because of design excellence and simplicity, the gate leaf (even up to 10-metres long) can be easily pulled open and then closed. You will not need any special tools and fiddly adjustments nor will it involve any strenuous physical activity. The whole operation can be achieved within seconds.

Pro active gate safety systems – Why are these important?

Many years ago, the founders of Gated engaged an independent organisation to undertake a detailed analysis to determine all the risks associated with the manufacturer, installation, operation and maintenance of the cantilever sliding gate system.

This consultative process which involved customers’ identified all the risk elements of a sliding gate system. The process also determined suitable methods of firstly eliminating risk or reducing risk factors. As a consequence of the risk assessment all Gated cantilever sliding gate designs provide pro active safety systems that are integral to the overall gate design. Once again, a combination of electrical ingenuity and mechanical design applications have produced a gate system that may safely open and close at high speed which is ideal for security applications.

At Gated we are committed to providing products to clients that constitute a safe operating system which will significantly reduced the legal risks associated with vicarious liability and duty of care. At Gated we enjoy working with clients who demonstrate a commitment to health and safety and contemporary risk management practices through their purchasing practices.

Many have asked whether the inclusion of our safety systems has detracted from the operational effectiveness of the gate system. Our designers are pleased to say that they have actually enhanced the operational effectiveness of the system. It’s the inclusion of better and more technologically advanced systems that has reduced risk elements and allowed superior and reliable performance.

In relation to pedestrian and vehicle safety, all our inductive loop and photo electric beam sets are accurately monitored via the PLC which facilitates high confidence levels of safety.

Not just our cantilever, but all our gates possess both audible and visual warnings with relevant warning signs strategically placed. As with all gate systems, pinch points exist and these are protected by mechanical and electrical systems. The mechanical protection is provided by polycarbonate barriers and with safety fences around the back rail of the sliding gate. The quality photo electric beams will ensure pro active safety systems are in place primarily for pedestrians, but also as a back up for the inductive loops designed for vehicle detection.

Some companies use bump stripes on their gate leaf and around the pinch points of their gate tower. At Gated we don’t recommend devices that are reactive. Given that high speed gates exist, a collision between a gate leaf and a person or even vehicle is not an acceptable risk. Injury and damage must be avoided at all costs and only pro active systems provide this ability and realistically address your potential risk issues.

It is our recommendation that should a gate company you are considering claim to have addressed the risks of an automated gate system, ask them for their rational and reasons for their safety systems. Its our believe it’s a risk to option safety, so we don’t.

Routine Maintenance is important

While the Gated cantilever sliding gate is a high quality system, it’ not a fit and forget system. As with any capital investment, regular service and adjustment will ensure your product operates safety and reliably throughout its operational life.

It is also an essential health and safety principle that all equipment is the subject of regular reviews and maintenance checks to ensure it’s operating safely and within specifications. As the automated gate systems have many mechanical and wearing parts/surfaces, adjustments will be required on an on-going basis. The Gated routine maintenance involves a comprehensive checklist of items to be checked, adjusted and monitored. Worn or faulty parts are better replaced before they fail and our expert technicians will ensure your gate is the least of your day to day worries.

It’s our firm belief that the safety systems installed on our gate systems are as significant for the gate industry as the introduction of the “seat belt and airbag” to the automotive industry. Given that a quality gate system can cost as much as a small car these days regular maintenance and service will ensure that your gate system will continue to run both reliably and safely for many years. It’s simply an investment that protects your business efficiency and risks.

At Gated we also offer a full three year parts and labour warranty on all new gate purchases. Indeed, should you have a gate system installed by a rival manufacturer; our expert service crew would be happy and capable of looking after this device as well. Please call to arrange a no obligation visit and routine maintenance quotation.
